The European Commission has identified several priority areas for strengthening existing waste legislation in a recently published Communication on the future of biowaste policy. The policy paper suggests that increasing biowaste recycling and recovery could deliver significant environmental benefits, such as saving 10 million tonnes of CO2. This represents a 4% contribution to a 10% reduction target for 2020 in sectors outside the EU’s Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETSi).
