Mercury

MercuryFurther to Decision 23/9 of the UNEPi (United Nations Environment Programme) Governing Council on 25 February 2009, CEMBUREAU decided to cooperate with the UNEP on mercury emissions with the view to becoming a partner, with governments and other stakeholders, in an approach to reduce risks to human health and the environment from the release of mercury and its compounds to the environment.

CEMBUREAU and the CSIi joined forces to tackle this matter. After a first assessment, the University of Liège (ULg) in Belgium was commissioned by CEMBUREAU and the CSI to provide an overall inventory of mercury emissions in the cement industry worldwide and, when appropriate, identify the best practices available to reduce such emissions.
