Safety data sheets (introduced by Directive 91/155/EC) are the key tool for hazard and risk management communication in the supply chain under REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemical substances): from manufacturers, to formulators, to their professional customers. On 1 July 2007, REACH repealed Directive 91/155/EC. It introduced some changes in the structure of the SDSi, but most of the elements of the Directive were kept.
CEMBUREAU has prepared safety data sheet templates for cement and clinker which take into account REACH requirements. These are currently under review to take into account changes to the REACH regulation and the new classification system, and will be made available when finanlised.
A new element introduced by REACH is that when a chemical safety report is prepared, the relevant exposure scenarios for the registered substance(s) shall be placed in annex to the SDS and the content of the SDS should be in line with the chemical safety report.
Following the adaptation of the regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 of 16 December 2008 on classification, labelling and packaging of substances and mixtures, and to harmonise with the United Nations’ Globally Harmonised System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHSi), further changes will be introduced to Annex II of REACH in 2010. CEMBUREAU will adapt its templates for SDS accordingly.

Implementation of the CLPi Regulation: CEMBUREAU produces C&L and SDS Package
This package, produced by CEMBUREAU, contains a proposal, as approved by the CEMBUREAU board on 28 September, for the classification and labelling of Portland cement clinker and common cements under the new Regulation on classification, labelling and packaging of substances and mixtures (CLPi, Regulation 1272/2008). This classification will now be used by all CEMBUREAU members as of 1 December 2010 for Portland cement clinker and 1 December 2012 for common cements. Read more
